Jo downs is one of the world’s most prominent fused glass designers. Her advanced fusion techniques allow for the creation of abstract designs of great individuality, vibrant colour, amazing texture and depth.
Based in Cornwall, Jo Downs' art draws inspiration from the natural world around her. Cornwall has a unique light that gently bathes the environment and has inspired artists for centuries. Jo gently working with the light, coaxing it to achieve her unique artistic ideas.
Along with a popular range of handmade giftware, Jo has developed her fusing studio to undertake large architectural and interior projects. this unique facility and her innovative designs have earned commissions for cruise liners, the very best hotels from around the world and numerous corporate head offices. She has also enjoyed a variety of private commissions, ranging from family homes to doctors surgeries and churches. |

1991-1994 University of Sunderland BA Hons: Design in Glass & Ceramics
1995–1996 Work placements with various Glass Artists Mike Davies, Kate Watkinson, Galia Amsel, Rebecca Newnham.
1996 Set up small workshop producing fused glass.
1997 Designing and completing fused glass projects for corporate clients including:P&O cruiseliners, Hilton Hotels, Forte Hotels.
1998 Guest Artist at Stutgart Art Academy – working under Professor Hewel. Developed own work and fusing techniques and ran workshops for the students.
1999 Set up Jo Downs Glass Design in Stuttgart. Undertook commissions in fused glass for Hilton Hotels, British Borneo Oil & Gas, Dr Mollenkopf along with other smaller private commissions.
2001 Relocated to Launceston, Cornwall. Continued with large scale commissions and developed a range of smaller fused glass pieces, including bowls, mirrors, candlesticks, tiles etc. that are sold in galleries throughout the country. Work is also sold at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew, National Trust properties throughout Cornwall and Scotland and the British maritime Museum.
2001 –2006. Projects include P&O Cruiseliners, Arcadia, Adonia, Oceana and Artemis, Fulham Methodist Church, designs for the Matisse. Exhibition At the RCA, Westminister Tower, Microgaming Head office, Isle of Man, Johnson & Johnson Head Office, Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster, Whipsderry Hotel, Newquay Commissioned by Molton Brown to design interior accessories which are now a range of best selling pieces available in all Molton Brown stores.
2005 Opened Jo Downs Glass Gallery Padstow.
2006 Opened Jo Downs Glass Gallery Truro.
2007 Moved to a new studio facility in Cornwall. Opened Jo Downs Glass Gallery in St Ives. Complete ceiling for Ventura cruise liner.
2008 Developed range for Eden Project Completed large commissions for Tresco Plans to open further gallery/shops in Bath, Exeter and London
